OpenAI Doubles ChatGPT Pro Usage Limits Without Raising Prices

OpenAI has announced major changes to its ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, doubling the Work and Codex usage allowances for several plans while canceling a previously announced reduction for existing users.

The changes took effect on October 29, 2026, and apply to the $100, $200, and $500 monthly Pro subscriptions.

According to OpenAI, the updated allowances are available automatically to existing subscribers, while new customers receive the increased limits immediately.

The company has not increased subscription prices.

ChatGPT Pro Users Get More Usage

OpenAI has doubled the Work and Codex usage allowances for subscribers on its Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans.

Customers on Pro 200 who previously had lower allowances will also receive twice their previous usage, bringing them in line with other subscribers paying the same price.

However, Pro 200 customers who already had the higher allowance will keep their existing limits rather than receive another doubling.

The changes are as follows:

Subscription Monthly Price Usage Changes
Pro 100 $100 Work and Codex allowance doubled
Pro 200 (lower allowance) $200 Allowance doubled to match existing higher limits
Pro 200 (higher allowance) $200 Existing allowance maintained
Pro 500 $500 Work and Codex allowance doubled

The increased allowances are available without canceling or renewing subscriptions.

OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT Plus usage limits remain unchanged.

OpenAI Cancels Planned Pro 200 Usage Cut

The announcement also reverses a controversial change previously planned for ChatGPT Pro 200.

In September, OpenAI informed some subscribers that their Work and Codex allowances would be reduced.

The planned adjustment would have lowered the previously described allowance from approximately 20 times the Plus level to 10 times.

Existing customers with higher limits were temporarily protected, but the reduction was expected to take effect after October 29.

OpenAI has now canceled that reduction.

As a result, existing subscribers will retain their higher usage allowances, while customers previously receiving less capacity will be upgraded.

The company has also reopened the Pro 200 subscription to new customers at $200 per month.

What Are Work and Codex?

ChatGPT Work allows users to assign complex tasks to AI, including researching information, analyzing files, creating documents, and completing multi-step projects.

Codex is OpenAI’s AI coding assistant, designed to help developers write, review, debug, and modify software.

Both services share a usage allowance under eligible subscriptions.

The additional capacity means subscribers can perform more AI-assisted work before reaching their included usage limits.

However, OpenAI says doubling an allowance does not necessarily mean users can complete twice as many tasks.

Usage depends on the AI model, task complexity, reasoning settings, and the amount of information being processed.

Pro 500 Offers Faster AI Processing

OpenAI’s highest-priced personal subscription, Pro 500, costs $500 per month.

It includes access to Ultrafast processing for supported models, including GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

However, Ultrafast consumes included usage at eight times the standard rate.

The faster processing option is not included with Pro 100 or Pro 200.

OpenAI also maintains separate weekly limits for its GPT-6 Pro model in regular ChatGPT conversations.

Those limits remain unchanged for Pro 100 and Pro 500 subscribers. Pro 200 users who previously had lower weekly limits are being upgraded to match the higher allowance.

Business Premium Users Also Receive More Usage

OpenAI has confirmed that the changes also include increased Work and Codex usage for ChatGPT Business Premium subscribers.

However, the company has not specified the exact increase for Business Premium accounts. ChatGPT Business offers two subscription options: Standard and Premium. Business Standard costs $25 per user monthly, or $20 per user monthly with annual billing.

Business Premium costs $125 per user monthly, or $100 per user monthly with annual billing. These business subscriptions are separate from personal ChatGPT Pro plans.

How to Check Your New Usage Limits

OpenAI says eligible subscribers can check their updated allowances through the Usage section in ChatGPT settings.

Users can view their remaining capacity and the time when their allowance resets.

The changes apply automatically, so subscribers do not need to contact support or purchase another subscription.

OpenAI also allows eligible customers to purchase additional credits for supported Work and Codex activities after using their included allowance.

The latest changes provide more capacity for users who regularly rely on AI for coding, research, and other demanding tasks, without increasing their monthly subscription costs.
