Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang publicly backed US President Donald Trump against calls to slow AI development after Trump unexpectedly phoned him while he was onstage at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.
Huang put the call on speaker as he was appearing with the hosts of the All-In podcast, allowing the audience to hear part of the conversation.
Trump Calls AI Slowdown Push a ‘Hoax’
Before the call, Huang and the hosts had been discussing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow the pace at which frontier AI capabilities improve.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also expressed support for slowing or pacing some AI development, while Huang has taken a more aggressive position on maintaining technological progress.
Trump told Huang that efforts to slow the industry could benefit groups that do not want the US to succeed, including China.
“It could also be China. And we’re not going to let that happen. It’s a hoax,” Trump said.
Huang replied: “You’re right. We’re not going to let that happen, sir.”
The response drew applause from the audience.
Trump Says US Must Keep Its AI Lead
Trump said AI development should still be handled carefully, but argued that safety concerns should not be used to stop the wider industry.
“We have to do things, and we have to do them prudently, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop an industry,” Trump told Huang.
He added that the US intends to remain the global leader in artificial intelligence.
Data Centers Are Facing Growing Opposition
The wider debate is not limited to AI safety.
Trump allies have argued that opposition to new data centers could weaken US competitiveness, while some have even described the backlash as part of an effort to slow American AI development.
Public concerns are more practical in many cases.
Recent Gallup polling found that around seven in 10 Americans oppose new data centers being built in their local area. More than half cited concerns about their effect on environmental resources, while others pointed to higher living costs and effects on quality of life.
The exchange between Trump and Huang highlights the growing divide over how quickly AI companies should continue developing more capable systems.
While some industry leaders are calling for slower progress and stronger safeguards, Huang and Trump appear firmly opposed to any broad slowdown.
