Next Xbox Could Cost as Much as $1,800 — 2028 Release Expected

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console could cost consumers as much as $1,800 when it launches, according to a new report that also claims the company is targeting a 2028 release.

The console, codenamed Project Helix, has reportedly been internally projected to cost between $1,200 and $1,800. However, that is not a confirmed retail price, and Microsoft could reduce the final cost by subsidizing the hardware.

According to the report, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma plans to release Project Helix during the 2028 holiday season.

Microsoft has not officially announced a retail launch date or price for the console.

The company has, however, already confirmed that Project Helix is in development. In March, Microsoft said it was working with AMD on the next-generation Xbox and planned to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027.

Microsoft has described its next generation of Xbox hardware as a broader family of devices, with Project Helix designed to support both Xbox and PC games.

New Xbox Handheld Could Arrive First

Before the home console launches, Microsoft is reportedly planning a next-generation Xbox handheld for the 2027 holiday season.

The handheld is said to be part of the company’s wider Project Helix hardware plans. The report does not provide a price for the device.

It also remains unclear whether Microsoft will manufacture the handheld itself or work with another hardware company.

The reported $1,200 to $1,800 range represents an internal projection rather than a finalized consumer price.

Microsoft could choose to subsidize the console, which would lower the amount customers pay at launch.

For now, Microsoft has only officially confirmed that Project Helix is under development. The reported 2027 handheld launch, 2028 console release and potential $1,800 price remain unconfirmed plans.
