A one-month-old baby has had his hand amputated after what his family alleges was medical negligence at a private hospital in Karachi.
Police have registered a case against a doctor and hospital staff at the Pirabad police station.
The baby’s father said he took his son, Azmatullah, to a hospital in Orangi Town on August 31, 2026, after the child became unwell. He alleged that Doctor Yasir Inam instructed staff to insert a cannula into the baby’s hand and bandage it.
According to the father, three staff members carried out the procedure and administered injections through the cannula several times.
He said that when he returned four days later and the bandage was removed, the baby’s hand had turned black. The father claimed the doctor prescribed medicine and said the infection would improve.
As the child’s condition worsened, the family took him to Jinnah Hospital, where doctors allegedly told them the infection was caused by an improperly inserted cannula and that the hand had to be amputated.
The father has accused Dr Yasir Inam and three unidentified staff members of negligence. Police said they have also contacted the healthcare commission for assistance in the investigation.
The hospital administration said the family had visited in August and left after the cannula was inserted without informing staff. It added that it only recently learned about the amputation and is investigating the matter, while also preparing to face legal proceedings.
