New Pill Helps Men Regrow Hair in Just 6 Months
A new oral treatment for hair loss has shown promising results in a late-stage clinical trial, significantly improving hair growth in men after six months.
US drugmaker Veradermics announced that its experimental pill, VDPHL01, performed better than a placebo in a study involving more than 500 men with mild to moderate male pattern hair loss.
The company said the trial met all its primary and secondary goals, with consistent improvements in hair growth among participants. The treatment was also generally well tolerated, with no serious drug-related side effects reported.
VDPHL01 contains a specially formulated version of minoxidil that releases the medication slowly over time. Minoxidil is already widely used as a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp for hair loss in both men and women.
Although cheaper generic oral versions of minoxidil are available, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Prakhar Agrawal said the positive trial results have strengthened the commercial potential of Veradermics’ treatment.
The company identified Nutrafol, a hair growth supplement backed by Unilever, as a possible pricing benchmark for its pill. Nutrafol costs around $90 per month, or approximately $1,000 annually.
The company plans to announce additional results from another part of the study later this year.
Other pharmaceutical companies, including Pelage Pharmaceuticals and Cosmo Pharmaceuticals, are also developing new treatments for hair loss.
