Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday reviewed several major aviation development projects with a delegation of the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), led by Director General Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed.
The meeting focused on the proposed Greenfield Airport in Sukkur, modernization of Jinnah International Airport Karachi, upgradation of Hyderabad Airport and development of the Civil Aviation Training Institute (CATI) Hyderabad into an aviation university.
The PAA briefed the chief minister on the proposed Sukkur airport, which is planned to serve Upper Sindh and surrounding areas with an annual capacity of up to 1.6 million passengers. The project would also provide an alternative airport for flights diverted from Karachi.
The authority said around 3,000 acres would be required for the project and sought the Sindh government’s assistance with land acquisition, road connectivity and other provincial matters. The provincial government was also asked to consider participation through a public-private partnership.
For Hyderabad Airport, the PAA proposed extending the existing 7,000-foot runway to 11,500 feet and upgrading other aviation infrastructure. The project is intended to improve regional connectivity and provide another alternative for diverted flights.
Murad directed provincial departments to coordinate with the PAA and resolve land, connectivity and other issues to facilitate the projects.
