Cases of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease causing fever and severe joint pain, are surging in several villages of Ziarat Kaka Sahib in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Nowshera district, with hospitals reporting 50 to 100 new cases daily.
According to sources, various hospitals in Nowshera are struggling to cope with the surge, as a shortage of medical staff and essential facilities has made treatment difficult despite the heavy influx of patients.
Residents of the affected areas have expressed concern over the situation and demanded urgent action from the government and health department.
They have called for an emergency to be declared, along with the provision of adequate medicines, additional medical staff and necessary facilities at hospitals to control the outbreak and ensure timely treatment.
Chikungunya is transmitted through mosquito bites and does not spread from person to person. It has been detected in over 60 countries worldwide and has had a notable impact in European countries.
While fatalities from the disease are rare, symptoms can be severe and may lead to long-term complications.
Common symptoms include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle aches, rashes and swelling around the joints. Less common symptoms include measles-like rashes, vomiting and nausea. Diagnosis is confirmed only through blood tests.
