Medical University Fined Rs. 2 Crore in Female Student Suicide Case
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has imposed a Rs. 20 million fine on Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) over the death of a female student at its hostel in Lahore.
The fine was imposed by the PMDC Disciplinary Committee following a review of the circumstances surrounding the death of the student. The committee said the university was responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of its students.
It also directed FJMU to strengthen student supervision, monitor their physical and mental health, and introduce mentorship, harassment prevention, and counseling programs for female students.
According to committee documents, the decision was communicated to the university after receiving formal approval from the PMDC Council, which had earlier sought an explanation from FJMU regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the university has filed a review petition with the PMDC challenging the Rs. 20 million fine.
The case dates back to February 2026, when a 22-year-old final-year student reportedly jumped from the third floor of the university hostel in Lahore.
Police said she suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she died from critical head trauma and excessive blood loss.
Preliminary police findings indicated that the student had reportedly been experiencing severe depression for six months. Her final-year examinations were underway, and she was preparing for a paper scheduled for February 19 after completing an earlier exam.
The student, originally from Kashmir, was living in Lahore with her father.
Police had also announced an investigation into the incident and formed a medical board to examine the circumstances surrounding her death.
