Man Sells His Belongings to Meet Dream Woman Only to Find Out She is AI
A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer sold his belongings and travelled nearly 2,000 kms to meet a woman he hoped to marry, only to discover she was an AI-generated character.
Edimar Martins told TV Mirante that he first encountered a social media account using the name Jéssica Oliveira in 2020. He said he had not suspected that the woman was artificial.
Martins sold his possessions on October 9 to pay for a bus journey from Maranhão state to Belo Horizonte, arriving on October 11.
However, his search for the woman ended in disappointment.
“I went to the radio station there, and they said no, that’s fake news, that woman doesn’t exist,” he said.
After running out of money, Martins approached Belo Horizonte City Hall. He told a social worker that loneliness had prompted the journey and received assistance to return home.
The AI persona, also known as Jessica Fazendeira, appeared on a TikTok account with around 300,000 followers. In a since-deleted video, the character offered to financially support a man willing to join her on a farm.
The person behind the account later acknowledged that the character was AI-generated but denied having any direct contact with Martins.
