Lahore Orders New Medical Tests for Existing Commercial Driving License Holders

Existing commercial driving license holders in Lahore will have to undergo fresh medical examinations as traffic authorities tighten checks on drivers following an accident in Garhi Shahu that killed three members of a family.

Lahore’s chief traffic officer said medical examinations, eyesight checks and color blindness tests are mandatory for commercial license applicants. Authorities will now also require drivers with previously issued commercial licenses to have their medical fitness reassessed.

The CTO said officials were already compiling commercial drivers’ records and had canceled the licenses of 170 drivers with criminal histories.

According to figures shared by the traffic chief, commercial vehicles make up 8% of all vehicles but are involved in 45% of accidents. He said driver negligence had been identified in most fatal crashes.

The CTO also warned that authorities would make no concessions on fitness certificates for commercial vehicles, placing vehicle condition alongside driver health and conduct among enforcement priorities.

The measures come after the Garhi Shahu crash brought road safety concerns back into focus. However, the traffic chief said accidents recorded this year were down 16% compared with last year.
