Kenya Reports First-Ever Ebola Death

Kenya has reported its first-ever Ebola death after a 40-year-old Kenyan businessman died following his return from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Health Minister Aden Duale said the man had been living in the DRC and fell ill around a month ago. He received treatment there before traveling overland to Kampala, Uganda, and later flying to Nairobi on October 3.

Kenya had never previously recorded an Ebola case.

The development comes as the DRC continues to battle its 17th Ebola outbreak, which was declared in May. The disease has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa over the past 50 years.

Neighboring Uganda had also recorded 20 Ebola cases, almost all involving people who had traveled from the DRC. Two people died before Uganda was declared Ebola-free in August.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said it is sending a team to Kenya to assist authorities. Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya is also expected to visit the country in the coming days.
