KDA Launches Anti-Encroachment Operation in Karachi

The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) has launched an anti-encroachment operation in Lines Area to clear public roads, footpaths, green belts and government land of illegal occupation, aiming to improve pedestrian access, traffic flow, cleanliness and the overall urban environment.

According to a KDA press release issued on Sunday, the operation is being conducted on the directives of KDA Director General Zain-ul-Abideen Ansari under the supervision of Lines Area Project Director Muhammad Umar Farooq and Demolition In-charge Muhammad Ishtiaq.

During the drive, people responsible for encroachments on roads, footpaths and green belts were directed to remove obstructions voluntarily and vacate government land. KDA officials also removed an illegal occupation from a plot during the operation.

The authority said the campaign would continue next week, warning that legal action would be taken against those who failed to remove encroachments and illegally placed items from public spaces.

The drive comes amid persistent urban management challenges in Karachi, where encroachments on roads and footpaths can narrow traffic lanes, obstruct pedestrians and force people to walk on busy roads, increasing their exposure to traffic accidents.

The problem can particularly affect children, older people, and persons with disabilities, who need safe and unobstructed pedestrian routes.

In a densely populated city such as Karachi, keeping footpaths and roads clear is essential for improving mobility and making public spaces accessible to all citizens. Unauthorised occupation of public land can also restrict emergency access, complicate traffic management, and undermine the orderly use of urban infrastructure.

The removal of encroachments from green belts is equally important for protecting the city’s limited green spaces. When these areas are occupied or used for storage and other unauthorised activities, opportunities for planting trees, maintaining vegetation and improving the local environment can be reduced.

Properly maintained green belts can help provide shade, trap dust and contribute to a more liveable urban environment.

Clearing public spaces can also support sanitation efforts by making roadsides and footpaths easier to clean and maintain. However, the long-term benefits will depend on regular monitoring to prevent encroachments from returning after the operation.

The KDA has urged residents and other stakeholders to cooperate with the campaign and refrain from using public spaces for private purposes. The authority said it remained committed to protecting government land, improving civic facilities and keeping public passageways free of encroachments.
