Karachi BRT Red Line Gets New Completion Date
Karachi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project has moved closer to resuming construction on its delayed Lot 2 section after TransKarachi completed the first phase of bidding for a new contract.
The 12.8-kilometer section runs from Numaish to Mosamiyat and includes flyovers, underpasses, elevated U-turns, dedicated bus lanes, and 16 stations. Bids were submitted on October 8, and TransKarachi expects to complete the evaluation process and award the contract within a month.
The Sindh government cancelled the previous contract on April 21 over delays in construction. The main construction work under Lot 2 has remained stalled since the cancellation, although work on other parts of the project has continued separately.
A TransKarachi spokesperson said the new contractor would have 18 months to complete Lot 2 after the contract award. The project recently came under renewed scrutiny after an elevated structure collapsed on University Road, killing a man.
TransKarachi said work at the affected sites had remained suspended since the previous contract was cancelled. Meanwhile, construction continues on Lot 1, which covers a 9.4-kilometer stretch from Malir Halt to Mosamiyat.
The main corridor is scheduled for completion by December 2026, while the extension to Malir Halt is expected to finish by April 2027. Launched in March 2022 with funding from the Asian Development Bank, the Red Line project now has an overall completion deadline of June 2028.
