Japanese Scholarship Offering Up to ¥230,000 Monthly is Closing This Month

International students, including those from Pakistan, have until October 31, 2026, to apply for the Honjo International Scholarship, which offers monthly financial assistance of up to ¥230,000 for master’s and PhD program in Japan.

The scholarship, offered by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation, supports international students who are currently enrolled or planning to pursue postgraduate studies at Japanese graduate schools, including the University of Tokyo.

Applications for the 2027 scholarship cycle opened on September 1, 2026, and will close on October 31, 2026. According to the published scholarship details, approximately 10 students are expected to receive financial support under the program.

The scholarship is available to students from different countries and academic backgrounds, allowing eligible applicants to pursue higher education in Japan with monthly financial assistance.

Scholarship Benefits

The Honjo International Scholarship provides monthly financial support ranging from ¥180,000 to ¥230,000, depending on the duration of the selected degree program.

Students enrolled in master’s or doctoral program lasting one to two years are eligible to receive ¥230,000 per month. Those pursuing a three-year program receive ¥210,000 per month, while students enrolled in programmes lasting more than three years receive ¥180,000 per month.

The financial assistance is provided throughout the minimum period required to complete the degree.

However, the scholarship does not cover tuition fees. Students must therefore make separate arrangements to meet their university tuition expenses.

Who Can Apply for the Scholarship

The Honjo International Scholarship is open to international students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees at Japanese graduate institutions.

According to the scholarship information, applicants from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, and several other countries are eligible to apply.

The scholarship is available across all academic disciplines and research fields, allowing students from different educational backgrounds to submit applications.

Students who are already studying at a Japanese graduate school can apply for the scholarship. Those currently living outside Japan can also apply if they have received acceptance from a Japanese graduate institution.

Applicants interested in pursuing their degrees at the University of Tokyo must also meet the university’s graduate admission requirements.

Academic and Language Requirements

According to the published scholarship details, applicants are expected to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify for the program.

The listed English-language requirements include an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL iBT score of 90.

Applicants must also provide relevant academic records, including transcripts and degree certificates, as part of the application process.

In addition, candidates are required to prepare an application essay and submit one or two recommendation letters.

Students should review the foundation’s official eligibility requirements before applying to ensure they meet the conditions for their intended degree program.

Required Documents

Applicants must prepare the necessary academic and supporting documents before submitting their scholarship applications.

The published requirements include academic transcripts, previous degree certificates, an application essay, and recommendation letters.

Candidates applying from outside Japan must also have secured admission to a Japanese graduate school.

Students planning to study at the University of Tokyo or another Japanese institution must fulfil the admission requirements of their chosen university separately.

How to Apply for the Honjo International Scholarship

Interested students can apply directly to the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation through its official website.

The application process does not require university pre-selection, allowing eligible candidates to submit their scholarship applications directly to the foundation.

Students who are currently outside Japan can also apply after receiving acceptance from a Japanese graduate school.

Applicants must prepare their academic documents, complete the required application information, and submit their applications before the announced deadline.

Those interested in studying at the University of Tokyo must separately meet the institution’s admission requirements, as receiving the scholarship does not replace the university’s admission process.
