Islamabad Arrests 88 Shopkeepers for Using Plastic Bags

Islamabad’s district administration has arrested 88 shopkeepers and sealed nine shops during a crackdown on violations of the capital’s ban on polythene bags.

Officials said 313 kilograms of bags were confiscated during the latest enforcement operations. The action is being taken under the 2023 law prohibiting single-use plastics, according to the administration.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon said the ban aims to reduce environmental pollution and protect the natural environment.

He said plastic bags cause lasting pollution on land, in waterways and across urban areas. Discarded bags also block drains and add to sanitation problems, making their use a concern for both environmental protection and city maintenance.

Memon directed shopkeepers to immediately stop selling and supplying polythene bags and switch to environmentally friendly alternatives.

The district administration said strict legal action against violations was underway as part of a wider enforcement drive.

The deputy commissioner also appealed to residents and traders to cooperate with authorities in implementing the ban, saying public support was needed to help keep Islamabad clean and green.
