The iPhone Handoff feature, which lets you use the same phone number on two iPhones, is not something you can use for free. This is because some extra carrier costs come into play while using it.
US carrier T-Mobile will charge customers $5 per month to use Apple’s new iPhone Handoff feature. The feature is initially being offered through T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany. T-Mobile has now confirmed the monthly cost for its customers.
iPhone Handoff will be available on compatible iPhones running iOS 27. Apple’s newly launched iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo will support the feature from the start because they ship with iOS 27.
However, while the iPhone Handoff feature allows a phone number on two iPhones, the number cannot be active on both phones at the same time.
Instead, the user can switch the active connection between the two iPhones. This removes the need to manually move an eSIM whenever they want to use their other phone.
The feature is available through the iPhone’s settings on devices running iOS 27. T-Mobile’s support is required, however, so simply updating an iPhone to iOS 27 will not make Handoff available.
German carrier Telekom is offering the feature through its MultiSIM service rather than introducing the same standalone $5 monthly charge used by T-Mobile.
This means the price of iPhone Handoff depends on the carrier and its existing MultiSIM arrangements.
What Else Does iPhone Handoff Do?
Although sharing one phone number between two iPhones is the main feature, Handoff is designed to move more of the user’s communication experience between the devices.
When a user switches to the second iPhone, calls, voicemail, iMessage, RCS, SMS, and MMS can move to the newly active device. The active iPhone also becomes the device used for Find My location.
The two phones remain connected to the same Apple Account, while other iCloud-synced information can continue to stay updated across both devices.
On supported T-Mobile plans, the second iPhone can also use mobile data, hotspot, and other eligible carrier services.
There are some limitations. Only one of the two iPhones can be active on the mobile network at a time, and some features, including certain Wallet items and Apple Watch connections, may remain tied to a specific iPhone.
For users who regularly switch between two iPhones, Handoff essentially provides a way to change their active phone without repeatedly transferring their cellular connection.
