iPhone Duo Launches as Apple’s First-Ever Foldable Smartphone
Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The new model uses a book-style design that opens to reveal a large 7.6-inch display while retaining a smaller screen for use when the phone is closed.
The Duo is designed to work as both a conventional smartphone and a larger multitasking device. When unfolded, users can run apps side by side and use the larger screen for tasks such as video, gaming, and document work. Apple also supports Apple Pencil input on the foldable for the first time on an iPhone.
Design and Display
The iPhone Duo uses a short and wide, passport-style design. When closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening the phone reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple describes as the largest display ever used on an iPhone.
The inner display gives the Duo a much larger workspace than a conventional iPhone. Apple supports side-by-side apps and other multitasking features on the larger screen.
Both displays support ProMotion with refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The inner screen uses a custom surface designed to reduce the appearance of the fold when the phone is opened. Apple also uses a scratch-resistant coating on the display.
The phone uses a titanium structure reinforced with ceramic fibers and second-generation Ceramic Shield protection. It also has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
Apple offers the Duo in Star White and Night Sky finishes.
Face ID is not used on the foldable. Instead, Apple has placed Touch ID on the side of the device, allowing the authentication hardware to fit into the thinner foldable design.
Internals and Software
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometer process. The chip has a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU, with a 32-core Neural Engine for AI processing.
The phone also uses Apple’s C2 modem for cellular connectivity.
The Duo runs iOS 27, with Apple’s software adapted for its two-screen form factor. The larger internal display allows multiple apps to run side by side, while the system can transition between the outer and inner screens as the phone is opened and closed.
The device includes USB-C connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and NFC. It also supports MagSafe wireless charging.
AI Features
The iPhone Duo supports Apple’s Apple Intelligence features through iOS 27.
The A20 Pro’s Neural Engine handles AI processing on the device, while Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence system also uses Private Cloud Compute for requests that require additional processing.
The Duo also gets the new AI capabilities introduced with iOS 27, including the updated Siri experience, AI-assisted image editing and other Apple Intelligence tools.
The foldable form factor adds another use for these features. The larger internal screen gives AI-generated content, image editing, and multitasking tools more space to display information and controls.
Cameras
The iPhone Duo has a dual 48MP rear camera system. Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro models, the foldable does not have a third dedicated telephoto camera.
The phone also has a front-facing camera for video calls. The inner display uses an under-display camera, allowing Apple to avoid placing a visible camera cutout in the larger screen.
The rear cameras can also be used when the phone is unfolded, allowing the large internal display to act as a viewfinder.
Apple has focused the Duo’s camera system on fitting two high-resolution cameras into a thinner foldable body rather than matching the three-camera system used by its Pro iPhones.
Battery and Pricing
The Duo uses two battery cells, with the batteries split between the two halves of the foldable body.
Apple rates the phone for up to 44 hours of use when relying on the outer display. Video playback on the larger internal screen is rated at up to 31 hours.
The dual-battery arrangement allows Apple to use the available space on both sides of the foldable while keeping the device thin.
The iPhone Duo also supports wireless charging through MagSafe.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage.
Apple also offers higher-capacity versions, including a 2TB configuration that costs around $3,000.
