India’s narrow win over Japan in the men’s T20 international has sparked controversy after umpires overturned a crucial wide-ball decision during the closing stages of the match.
India entered the contest ranked 39 places above Japan in the T20 rankings, but rain interruptions reduced the game and gave the hosts a realistic chance of pulling off a major upset.
Batting first, India struggled to 32-4 after losing Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan early. Captain Shreyas Iyer was the top scorer with 16 runs.
Japan were therefore set a target of just 33 runs, putting them within reach of a historic victory against the much higher-ranked Indian side.
The match remained close until the final moments, with Japan needing six runs from four balls when the controversial incident took place.
Axar Patel delivered a ball down the leg side to Alexander Shirai-Patmore, and the on-field umpire initially signaled a wide, which would have added one run to Japan’s total.
However, Patel and wicketkeeper Sanju Samson immediately questioned the decision, while captain Shreyas Iyer also spoke with the square-leg umpire.
Following a discussion between the two umpires, the original call was reversed and the wide was withdrawn.
The decision proved significant in a closely contested finish and prompted criticism from fans online, with several questioning how an on-field call could be changed after discussions involving Indian players and the match officials.
Under the Laws of Cricket, however, an umpire can change a decision if the correction is made promptly. The two on-field umpires are also permitted to consult each other when there is uncertainty over a decision.
Despite the controversy, the revised call stood as Japan’s push for a historic upset ultimately fell short, allowing India to escape with a narrow victory.
