Hitler Becomes Mayor in South America
A Peruvian politician named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has won a narrow victory in a local mayoral election, attracting international attention because his first names match those of two fascist dictators.
The 45-year-old candidate from the center-left Ahora Nación party won in Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes, according to reported election results.
Simeon received 229 votes, finishing just 25 votes ahead of his nearest rival from the right-wing Renovación Popular Perú party. Election office data showed that slightly more than 700 people participated, with Simeon securing around 34 percent of the vote.
He will represent a district with fewer than 1,000 residents in the central department of Huánuco, approximately 360 kilometers from Lima. His candidate profile lists Queropalca as his birthplace.
His unusual name, combining those of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, has brought attention to an otherwise little-known election. However, a name alone does not establish a politician’s ideological views.
Peru has seen a similar case before. Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of Yúngar in 2018 after reportedly campaigning with the slogan “I’m the good Hitler.”
Elsewhere, Namibian politician Adolf Hitler Uunona drew international headlines after winning a local election in 2020.
