Health Minister Accuses Pakistan Nursing Council of Corruption

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has vowed to reform the nursing sector, saying that “notorious people” previously sat on the Pakistan Nursing Council and that nursing college approvals were being granted in exchange for money.

Addressing a certificate distribution ceremony for nursing students organised by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University in Islamabad, the minister said the nursing profession accounts for 99 percent of healthcare delivery but has not been given the importance it deserves.

“The profession has not been given the status it should have received, and it must be given importance at every level,” he said.

Kamal said that those caught stealing from the system show no shame and instead approach courts to obtain stay orders, displaying boldness despite their wrongdoing.

He described the completion of training for 50 nurses as the first drop of rain, adding that nurses at all federal hospitals will now be trained.

The minister pledged to bring improvements in salaries and every other matter related to the nursing profession.

He reiterated that the government will introduce reforms in the Pakistan Nursing Council to strengthen the healthcare system.
