OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgraded model that it says delivers performance close to GPT-6 Astra in agentic coding, computer use, and professional work while costing one-fifth as much for standard API input and output tokens.
The model succeeds GPT-6 Sol, released on September 22. GPT-6.1 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex, but is not yet available in regular ChatGPT conversations. Developers can access it through the API gpt-6.1-sol.
Pricing and Performance
GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, compared with Astra’s $10 and $50 respectively. Cached input costs $0.10 per million tokens, 95% below Sol’s standard input price and half the cached-input price of GPT-6 Sol.
OpenAI also plans an Ultrafast version that can generate tokens up to eight times faster in Codex.

Astra still leads Terminal-Bench Science with 68.1%, and OpenAI recommends it for the most demanding scientific research tasks.
Salesforce executive vice president of software engineering Jayesh Govindarajan said GPT-6.1 Sol helped identify accessibility and language-support issues and worked around limitations in the company’s test setup.
Safety Tests
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol also improved on several alignment evaluations.
In a test involving a broken search tool, Sol failed to disclose the problem in 2.1% of cases, compared with 4.9% for GPT-6 Sol and 1.5% for Astra.
In another test, it attempted to work around explicit restrictions in 23.5% of cases, compared with 64.4% for GPT-6 Sol and 17.4% for Astra. OpenAI said it observed no attempts by Sol to bypass its automated safety reviewer.
The company notes that these tests deliberately use challenging scenarios and are not representative of normal usage.
