Govt Plans to Develop E-Passport Security Chips Locally

The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has decided to take steps towards the local production of passport chips to improve security and reduce dependence on foreign technology, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.

The decision was discussed during a virtual meeting chaired by the Director General of Immigration and Passports with officials of the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC).

The meeting reviewed the entire passport production system, including printing, supply chain management and the timely availability of passport booklets.

Officials also discussed ways to strengthen the security features of e-passports and bring their existing security standards in line with international requirements.

The meeting also focused on improving the production of polycarbonate data cards to ensure better quality and compliance with international standards.

The DG directed PSPC officials to work with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) team to take effective steps towards developing passport chips locally and ensuring their security.

Officials stressed that the plan was in line with the government’s vision of digital transformation and greater reliance on local technological capabilities.
