The federal government has removed the five-liter limit on petrol purchases under its relief scheme, allowing beneficiaries to receive the weekly Rs. 500 discount even when they purchase less than five liters of petrol.
Speaking at a press conference, Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima said the government had introduced three major changes to make the scheme accessible to more people amid rising global oil prices and regional tensions.
Under the revised scheme, all motorcycles and three-wheelers registered on or after January 1, 2006, will be eligible for registration. The government has also removed the five-liter limit attached to each token, while registration messages through SMS have been made free.
Fatima said the government had received different views on extending the relief to two and three-wheelers before the changes were finalized. She said 91.6 percent of registrations under the scheme are for two and three-wheelers, while vehicles up to 800cc account for 8.4 percent of registrations.
The minister said 1,493,848 fuel tokens had been issued to citizens under the scheme, while 655,067 people had already received fuel. She said the implementation committee was meeting three times a day and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was closely monitoring the figures and had directed officials to resolve any difficulties quickly.
The government has also removed all charges related to the scheme, according to the minister. She urged citizens not to share their CNIC numbers or registration details with anyone and to report anyone demanding money for the service.
Citizens can send an SMS to 9771 by entering their 13-digit CNIC number, the first word of the province where their vehicle is registered, and the vehicle registration details. Complaints involving petrol pumps can be made through 9772, while cases where a petrol pump refuses to provide the relief can be reported to 9771.
Fatima said the registration process had been kept simple so that more people could benefit from the scheme. She also said the government had provided a Rs. 100 per liter relief for vehicles up to 800cc under the program.
