Google Is Shutting Down Its AI Coding Tool
Google has announced that it is shutting down Jules, its AI coding assistant, as the company shifts its focus toward its Antigravity AI development platform.
The company confirmed that Jules will officially shut down on December 31, 2026, with users given until November 11 to finish their ongoing coding tasks.
After November 11, Jules will become a read-only service, meaning users can view their existing projects but will no longer be able to continue working on them through the platform.
The decision comes just over a year after Jules became publicly available in August 2025.
Why Is Google Shutting Down Jules?
Google introduced Jules as an AI assistant designed to help developers write, fix, and improve code.
Unlike traditional coding assistants that require constant interaction, Jules could work on tasks independently in the background.
Developers could connect their GitHub repositories, assign coding tasks, and allow Jules to work on them while they focused on other activities.
However, Google now wants to bring its AI coding efforts together under a single platform called Antigravity.
In its official announcement, Google described Jules as an experiment that helped the company understand how AI agents could assist software developers.
The company said the experience gained from Jules is helping shape other Google products, including Antigravity.
Google has not disclosed how many people were actively using Jules or whether low usage contributed to its closure.
What Happens to Existing Jules Users?
Google has confirmed two important dates for Jules users.
The first is November 11, 2026, which is the deadline for completing ongoing coding sessions.
After that date, the platform will switch to read-only mode.
The second is December 31, 2026, when Google plans to shut down Jules completely.
To help users save their work, Google has introduced a data export process.
Users can download their account settings, connected repositories, saved information, scheduled tasks, setup instructions, and previous coding sessions.
The export also includes details such as task instructions, plans, activity logs, and code changes.
Google explained that code, branches, and pull requests already stored on GitHub will remain available there after Jules closes.
However, users should export information stored directly inside Jules before the shutdown.
Google Shifts Focus to Antigravity
Google’s decision to discontinue Jules is part of its larger effort to simplify its AI coding products.
The company is now focusing on Antigravity, an AI-powered development platform designed to help developers manage coding tasks through AI agents.
Like Jules, Antigravity aims to reduce the amount of manual work involved in software development.
However, Google has not confirmed that every Jules feature will become available in Antigravity.
It has also not announced an automatic transfer process for moving existing Jules projects and settings to the new platform.
Google faces strong competition in the AI coding market from services such as OpenAI Codex, Anthropic’s Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot.
By bringing its development efforts together under Antigravity, the company aims to build a more unified AI coding experience.
For now, Jules users have until November 11 to complete their active projects and should save their data before the service closes permanently on December 31.
