Goods transporters have increased freight charges by up to 40 percent following 5 consecutive fuel rate hikes by the Petroleum Division.
Container transport rates from Karachi to Peshawar have risen to more than Rs. 900,000. Local and intercity transporters have also raised fares by up to 27 percent.
During the week, high-speed diesel reached Rs. 403 per litre and petrol to about Rs. 376 per litre.
Higher transport costs are expected to increase the cost of moving food, vegetables, fruits and other goods.
The Rawalpindi Regional Transport Authority has called a meeting with transporters to review the new fares and ordered action against operators charging rates without approval.
The All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association has also warned of severe reaction if the government doesn’t reverse this week’s fuel rate hikes.
