Garmin’s New $800 Golf Watch Tracks More Than Just Your Score
Garmin has officially unveiled the Approach S72, its latest premium smartwatch designed specifically for golfers.
The watch starts at $799.99 and will be available to order from October 9.
Design and Display
The Approach S72 comes in 43mm and 47mm case sizes. Both versions feature a titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens, and Garmin’s new ComfortFit fabric band.
The 43mm model has a 1.3-inch AMOLED display and weighs 41g. Garmin has also included a built-in LED flashlight, a feature that has increasingly appeared on its higher-end smartwatches.
Golf Features
The Approach S72 comes preloaded with maps for more than 43,000 golf courses.
Garmin has expanded its golf tracking capabilities with new measurements for hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation, all recorded directly from the wrist.
The watch can also overlay heart-rate data on post-round summaries, helping users see whether physical stress or fatigue corresponded with their performance on individual holes.
Existing Garmin golf features return, including Virtual Caddie, PlaysLike distance, aerial course imagery, and green contour information for reading putts.
PlaysLike adjusts distance calculations based on factors such as elevation and wind.
Health and Smartwatch Features
Garmin has expanded the S72 beyond golf with features found on its Venu and Fenix watches. A built-in microphone and speaker allow users to answer phone calls from their wrist and interact with their smartphone’s voice assistant.
The watch also supports Garmin’s ECG app, which can detect signs of atrial fibrillation. Other health features include HRV status, blood oxygen monitoring, and sleep tracking.
For everyday use, the S72 supports offline music storage for services such as Spotify, Garmin Pay for contactless payments, and multi-band GPS for outdoor activity tracking.
Battery and Pricing
Garmin says the Approach S72 can last up to 10 days in smartwatch mode. When actively using GPS during a round of golf, battery life drops to around 15 hours.
The Garmin Approach S72 is priced at $799.99, with orders beginning on October 9.
