A vessel carrying around 82,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas from Qatar has arrived at Port Qasim, marking the first Qatari LNG shipment to Pakistan through the Strait of Hormuz since July.
The vessel, Al Marrouna, carrying LNG from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal, crossed the strait on Monday and docked at the Engro LNG Terminal on Thursday morning, according to port authorities.
The shipment is the first Qatar origin LNG cargo to reach Pakistan through the strait since July 11. Scheduled LNG cargoes from Qatar Energy had been disrupted due to the regional conflict.
The LNG was procured under a government to government arrangement between Pakistan and Qatar and is expected to increase supplies to the power sector, providing temporary relief amid ongoing fuel shortages and high energy prices.
The arrival has also eased concerns about a prolonged disruption in Qatari LNG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for Pakistan’s energy imports.
Pakistan is currently facing power outages of six to 12 hours in several parts of the country amid higher fuel prices linked to renewed hostilities around the strait. The government has also introduced a daily fuel pricing mechanism in response to volatility in global crude markets.
Stakeholders remain concerned that a further escalation of the Gulf conflict could disrupt both crude oil and LNG supplies. Pakistan has also started purchasing small quantities of crude from the United States, although the longer shipping distance has increased costs.
