FBR Must Extend Tax Return Deadline

Consultants and tax experts have urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the Tax Year 2026 income tax filing deadline as taxpayers have faced repeated delays and technical problems with the IRIS portal.

FBR’s current deadline for individuals and associations of persons (AOPs) is 30 September. The Income Tax Ordinance allows 90 days for filing returns, but this year FBR opened the portal on 27 July, leaving roughly 65 days.

The Tax Year 2026 return became available on IRIS on July 27 while the final return form was officially notified on September 2 through S.R.O. 1495(I)/2026 with four new sections.

Tax expert Amer Sharif told ProPakistani that taxpayers have faced slowdowns, glitches, bugs and problems while submitting returns. The IRIS portal has time and again failed to properly accept returns in the past few weeks for many individuals.

The Pakistan Tax Bar Association has asked FBR to extend the deadline to December 3, 2026. The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has sought an extension to October 31, while the Pakistan Tax Advisers Association has requested time until November 30.

FBR’s official filing schedule still shows September 30 as the deadline as of September 28.

Amer said an early decision would give taxpayers and accountants enough time to complete and submit their returns instead of waiting for a last-minute extension announcement.
