Farmers May Get Rs. 5,000 Per Bag Subsidy for Fertilizers

With fertilizer costs and availability becoming a concern ahead of the Rabi season, provincial governments are weighing financial support for farmers, including subsidies of up to Rs. 5,000 per fertilizer bag.

Punjab is considering a Rs. 3,000 subsidy per bag, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has already decided to offer Rs. 5,000 through an in-kind support program, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

The minister said the government was working on measures to ease fertilizer supply and pricing pressures. During the meeting, the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research also reviewed the availability of DAP fertilizer, welcomed the recent import of 50,000 tons for the 2026-27 Rabi season, and called for a review of regulatory duties and General Sales Tax (GST) on imports to bring down prices.

Calls for Uniform Fertilizer Prices Across Provinces

The committee also welcomed record wheat sowing for the 2026-27 Rabi season and the announcement of a support price of Rs. 4,500 per 40 kilograms. Officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R) further informed lawmakers that rice production had increased by eight percent.

Committee chairman Syed Hussain Tariq urged the ministry to ensure farmers received necessary support, calling for a standardized subsidy system across provinces and uniform fertilizer prices nationwide.

The committee reviewed a proposed regulatory duty exemption for imported grandparent and parent stock of chicks, which are excluded under PCT codes 0105.1100 and 0105.9400, following ambiguity caused by duplicate entries in S.R.O. 1064(I)/2026.

The Tariff Policy Board unanimously recommended referring the matter to the Federal Cabinet at its October 2026 meeting. The committee will invite the Ministry of Finance and FBR to its next meeting for further discussion.

Separately, the committee approved the Seed (Amendment) Bill, 2026, with changes and recommended its passage by the National Assembly.

Several MNAs, including Nadeem Abbass, Abdul Qadir Khan, Shumaila Rana, Nazir Ahmed Bhugio, Syed Abrar Ali Shah, Syed Ayaz Sherazi, Syed Javed Ali Shah Jillani, and Usman Ali, attended alongside Rana Tanveer Hussain and senior MNFS&R officials.
