Dates Announced for 2026 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony
The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements will begin on October 5, with the physiology or medicine award, followed by prizes recognizing achievements in science, literature and peace.
The economics award will conclude the announcements on October 12. Each prize carries an increased cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.21 million, alongside international recognition for the recipients.
The awards were established through the will of Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, best known for inventing dynamite. He directed that most of his fortune fund prizes honoring work that benefits humanity.
Nobel died in 1896, but legal disputes over his will delayed the first awards until 1901. His original categories were physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace.
The economics prize was established separately in 1968 by Sweden’s central bank in Nobel’s memory. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects its winners, as well as those for physics and chemistry.
Past recipients include Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Ernest Hemingway, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, and Mother Teresa. Curie won twice, while Linus Pauling remains the only person to receive two Nobel Prizes without sharing either award.
The prizes will be presented on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death. The peace ceremony takes place in Oslo, Norway, while the other awards are presented in Stockholm, Sweden.
