Apple has limited two new camera controls introduced with iOS 27 to its newest iPhone models. The Texture and Grain options in Photographic Styles are available on the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo, while older iPhones do not support the new controls.
The change initially confused people because Apple’s earlier wording suggested that the features would be available on iPhones supporting the latest version of Photographic Styles. Apple’s current support documentation now provides a more specific list of compatible devices.
Texture and Grain Add More Photo Controls
The new options are part of Photographic Styles 3, giving users more control over the appearance of their photos.
Texture can be used to soften skin or create different visual effects, while Grain adds a film-like appearance. Users can also adjust the intensity of these effects.
Apple’s current support guide lists the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as compatible devices. The company also lists the feature on the iPhone Duo product page.
The iPhone Duo features a 48MP main camera, 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and Center Stage front camera. Apple says its updated Photographic Styles support the new Texture and Grain controls.
Older iPhones Miss the New Controls
Owners of older iPhones can still use Photographic Styles, but they will not receive the new Texture and Grain options.
Apple’s iOS 27 guide states that other supported iPhones can continue adjusting settings such as tone, color, and intensity. The new Texture and Grain controls are separate from these existing options.
Apple has not explained why the new controls are restricted to its latest models. Its support documentation only identifies which devices are compatible.
For users who want the new photo controls, Apple currently requires an iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max or iPhone Duo. Older iPhone models will continue to use the Photographic Styles features already available to them.
