Apple has launched the AirPods 5, bringing active noise cancellation (ANC), improved sound quality, and longer battery life to its standard open-ear earbuds. The new models also start at a lower price than the previous generation on a spec-for-spec basis.
AirPods 5 come in two versions. The standard model includes a USB-C charging case, while the higher-priced version comes with a wireless charging case and stem touch controls.
Both versions now support ANC. Apple claims the AirPods 5 offer the best active noise cancellation available in an open-ear design.
Improved Noise Cancellation and Sound
Apple says the new ANC system can reduce up to 50% more external noise than the previous generation.
Transparency mode has also been improved. Apple says it can reproduce voices and surrounding sounds more naturally.
The AirPods 5 use a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. These changes are designed to deliver richer and more detailed sound.
Apple also says the redesigned earbuds should work better with different ear shapes. The updated design brings improvements to personalized spatial audio as well.
New Siri Features and Gestures
AirPods 5 add hands-free Siri AI when paired with an Apple Intelligence-ready iPhone.
Users can ask Siri to find personal information in messages, emails, and photos and then use that information in supported apps.
Apple has also added head gestures for Siri. Users can nod to respond “yes” and shake their head to respond “no.”
The wireless charging version adds swipe controls on the stem for adjusting volume. Apple says this is the first time non-Pro AirPods have received this control.
Battery and Durability
AirPods 5 provide up to five hours of listening time with ANC enabled. That is one hour longer than the previous generation.
The wireless charging version offers up to 22 hours of total battery life.
The new earbuds also have an IP57 rating. This adds temporary immersion resistance compared with the splash resistance offered by the previous models.
Price and Availability
The AirPods 5 start at $129 with the standard USB-C charging case.
The version with a wireless charging case and stem touch controls costs $149.
