Amazon’s New Alexa Tablets Finally Get Full Google Play Access

Amazon has introduced a new lineup of Alexa tablets, marking another shift in its tablet strategy after previously dropping the Kindle name from its Fire devices.

The new lineup includes the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 8. Unlike older Fire tablets, the new models offer full access to the Google Play Store and focus more heavily on AI through Alexa+.

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is Amazon’s most powerful tablet yet.

It uses the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chipset, with Amazon claiming three times faster CPU performance and nine times faster GPU performance than the Fire Max 11.

The tablet features a 12-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and supports a 120Hz refresh rate.

A separate Nanomatte display option uses glare-resistant etched Corning glass for improved visibility indoors and outdoors.

The standard version comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage for $500. The Nanomatte version starts at $550 with the same memory configuration, while a 16GB/256GB model costs $680.

Battery life reaches up to 16 hours of video playback, while a dedicated reading mode can extend that to 20 hours by reducing blue light and silencing notifications.

The reading mode also includes natural color, softer paper tones and grayscale display options.

The 12 Pro uses an aluminum unibody, measures 6.5mm thick and weighs 550g. Its USB-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds of up to 5Gbps and DisplayPort video output.

Amazon also offers a $150 Pro Keyboard that connects directly to the tablet and supports multitasking with multiple apps side by side.

The optional Alexa Tablet Pro Pen costs $90, supports USI 2.0, 4,096 pressure levels and tilt detection, and attaches magnetically while charging wirelessly.

Alexa Tablet 11

The Alexa Tablet 11 uses an 11-inch 16:10 display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

It does not offer the Nanomatte option and comes with two speakers instead of the four Dolby Atmos speakers on the Pro.

The tablet uses the MediaTek MT8189 chipset with an eight-core CPU running at up to 2GHz.

It comes with 8GB RAM and either 64GB or 128GB storage. The 64GB version costs $330, while the 128GB model costs $380.

Battery life reaches up to 15 hours of video playback. Unlike the Pro, it uses USB-C 2.0 and does not support video output.

Alexa Tablet 8

The smallest model, the Alexa Tablet 8, features an 8.7-inch display with a resolution of 1340 × 800 pixels and a density of around 180ppi.

It weighs 329g and uses the same MediaTek MT8189 chipset as the 11-inch model.

The tablet is available with either 4GB or 8GB RAM.

The 4GB/64GB version costs $230, the 4GB/128GB model costs $280, and the 8GB/128GB version costs $300.

Battery life reaches up to 14 hours of video playback, with charging handled through USB-C 2.0.

Alexa+ Comes Built In

All three tablets include Alexa+, Amazon’s newer AI assistant.

Alexa+ supports natural-language conversations without requiring users to say “Hey, Alexa” before each request.

An optional On-Screen Intelligence feature allows Alexa+ to see what is displayed on the tablet, but Amazon says the feature is turned off by default and must be enabled manually.

Amazon Also Launches Kids Tablets

Amazon has also announced two new Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, with separate versions designed for children aged 3+ and 6+.

The 8.7-inch model comes with 64GB of storage and offers up to 14 hours of video playback, while the 11-inch version features a 2.5K display and 8GB of RAM.

Both tablets run Android and include a kid-proof case plus one year of Amazon Kids+. The subscription provides curated content from Disney, Nickelodeon, Lego and Sesame Street, along with parent-managed access to Google Play.

After the free year, Kids+ costs $7.99 per month for Prime members or $8.99 per month for non-Prime users.

Amazon also includes the Kids Parent Dashboard, which lets parents manage screen time, apply content filters and monitor activity. The dashboard is available directly on the tablet and through separate Android and iOS apps.

The version for younger children includes a soft bumper case, while the model aimed at older children uses a slimmer hard case. Available designs include characters and brands such as Paw Patrol, Barbie and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Amazon says the software experience also changes as children grow and their interests shift, moving from entertainment such as Bluey and coloring apps toward content including Harry Potter and homework tools.

Storybuilder Adds AI-Powered Creativity

The Kids Tablets also include Storybuilder, an AI-powered creative feature designed specifically for children.

It allows kids to use their voice to create characters, plot twists and fictional worlds, which can then be turned into picture books and comic books that they can share with their parents.

Amazon says Storybuilder includes safeguards designed to keep the experience age-appropriate.
