Authorities in Rahim Yar Khan have sealed two flour mills over allegations that low-cost broken rice was being mixed with government-issued wheat to produce flour.
District Food Controller Niaz Shah sealed Kohistan Flour Mill and Al-Qayum Flour Mill for allegedly producing substandard flour. Samples from nine other flour mills were also collected and sent to laboratories for testing.
According to reports, some flour mills were allegedly mixing broken rice, locally known as “niko,” with wheat used for flour production. The broken rice reportedly costs around Rs. 3,500 per maund, compared to approximately Rs. 4,700 per maund for government wheat.
The broken rice was allegedly ground at private mills and transported to flour mills at night before being mixed with wheat flour. The nighttime movement was reportedly intended to avoid detection during routine inspections.
The allegations have also raised concerns over the monitoring of government-issued wheat and the system used to track supplies provided to flour mills.
Laboratory testing of the collected samples is expected to determine whether the flour meets prescribed quality standards and whether any unauthorized ingredients were used.
If the alleged mixing is confirmed through laboratory testing, the mills found responsible could face legal action.
