At least 14 schoolchildren, including nine girls, suffered burns after bottles containing an acidic chemical reportedly fell and exploded in the laboratory of a private school in Lodhran.
According to Rescue 1122 media coordinator Safdar, students from Class I to IV were playing during recess in a joint classroom at a private school near Adda Permit, Multan Bypass, when a ball hit bottles kept in an open cupboard.
He said the bottles fell to the floor and exploded, causing the acidic chemical to spill on the children and burn parts of their bodies.
Rescue 1122 teams, along with four ambulances, two motorbikes, a rescue vehicle and a fire extinguisher, reached the school after an emergency call and provided first aid before shifting the injured children to the district headquarters hospital.
Officials from the police and administration also reached the site and began an inquiry.
One of the injured children, Hasan, 6, who suffered 27 percent burns, was shifted to the Burns Unit of Nishtar Hospital in Multan.
The other affected children are being treated at the DHQ hospital.
Police said the school owner, Chaudhry Aslam, fled after the incident and has been booked for alleged negligence. A case has been registered under sections 284, 285, 286 and 337-H of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of District Education Officer Mazhar Madni.
