100 Prisoners at Adiala Jail Test Positive for HIV
Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig has revealed that 100 out of around 8,000 prisoners at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi are HIV-positive, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
He disclosed while speaking at a ceremony held to mark the release of the Human Rights Commission’s annual prison data report.
Baig said Adiala Jail has been serving the prison population of two cities, which has led to a large number of inmates being kept at the facility.
He added that the number of prisoners at Adiala Jail will soon be reduced by half as construction work on Islamabad Jail is nearing completion.
According to him, half of the prisoners currently housed at Adiala Jail will be shifted to the new facility once it becomes operational, reducing the burden on the jail by around 50 percent.
Baig said there was no overcrowding issue in Punjab’s prisons, adding that 10 new prisons have been built in the province in recent years.
He said new barracks have also been constructed inside Adiala Jail to improve accommodation facilities.
The superintendent said most prisoners at Adiala Jail were arrested by police on different charges and have the right to seek post-arrest bail.
Speaking about healthcare, Baig said medical services were available to every prisoner at Adiala Jail.
He said the jail has six male doctors and one female doctor to provide medical care to inmates.
He added that regular medical check-ups are conducted for prisoners facing any health issue, while basic medical tests are also available inside the jail for initial assessment and treatment.
