Emergency Imposed in KP
President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday authorized Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following a federal cabinet meeting on the province’s security situation.
The President’s Secretariat said Zardari signed the summary under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.
The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz, recommended the move after reviewing the security situation in the province. The federal government accused politicians working in the provincial administration of disengaging from efforts to combat terrorism.
Currently, a protest march is headed for Islamabad demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who remains in prison.
The federal government criticised the KP provincial administration’s counterterrorism approach. The KP government has opposed Islamabad’s position on security policy and maintained that the province should have a role in decisions affecting its security.
The move follows a meeting between Zardari and Shehbaz on Saturday, during which they discussed the country’s political and security situation, particularly the deteriorating law and order situation in the northern province.
