British Council Celebrates 10 Years of Reopening Libraries in Pakistan

The British Council Libraries in Karachi and Lahore have marked a significant milestone this year, celebrating 10 years of serving communities through reading, learning, creativity and cultural exchange.

The anniversary celebration on 8th October in Karachi brought together an influential cross-section of Pakistan’s cultural, educational, public and creative landscape, including senior British Council leadership, government officials, industry leaders, educationists, influencers, social advocates, authors, artists and long-standing library members.

Over the past ten years, British Council Libraries across Karachi and Lahore have:

  • Welcomed more than 50,000 members
  • Hosted over 600 events, from book launches and author conversations to workshops, talks and cultural programmes
  • Engaged more than 20,000 children and young learners in reading and educational activities

James Hampson, Country Director, British Council Pakistan, said: “A decade in, and our libraries in Karachi and Lahore have grown into welcoming spaces where people can learn, exchange ideas, discover culture and build connections with one another and with the UK. As we mark this milestone, we are proud of the communities that have made these libraries their own and look forward to continuing a new chapter of learning, creativity and connection.”

The libraries’ continued presence reflects the British Council’s commitment to creating opportunities for people to connect with the UK and with one another through education, arts and culture.

The anniversary event also highlighted the importance of community spaces in Pakistan, particularly spaces that encourage reading, creativity, lifelong learning and meaningful cultural engagement.

The decade milestone represents a look back at the libraries’ journey, and the beginning of a new chapter – one focused on continuing to create accessible spaces for communities to read, learn, connect and engage with new ideas.
