The University of Southampton has opened applications for a PhD research project that will use artificial intelligence and deep learning to predict nanoscale defects in semiconductor chip manufacturing.
The project, Deep Learning Modelling of Nano Defects in Chip Fabrication, combines semiconductor fabrication, experimental characterisation, machine learning and high-performance computing.
Applications will remain open until June 1, 2027.
According to the University of Southampton, the project provides funding for eligible students. UK and EU students can receive tuition fee coverage and a tax-free living stipend.
International candidates, including students from Pakistan, can also apply, although full international tuition support may depend on additional faculty funding.

AI to Predict Defects Before Chip Manufacturing Fails
Modern processors, graphics chips and memory devices require thousands of tightly controlled manufacturing steps.
Small defects at the nanoscale can reduce chip quality, affect manufacturing yield and increase production costs.
Southampton researchers want to use deep learning to identify patterns that can predict these defects before they cause problems during fabrication.
The research aims to develop models that could help manufacturers improve production yield, shorten development cycles, and make semiconductor manufacturing more efficient.
PhD Combines AI With Hands-On Nanofabrication
This is not a purely software-based artificial intelligence project. The successful researcher will first manufacture nanoscale structures using techniques such as electron-beam lithography, plasma etching, and material deposition.
Microscopic and spectroscopic techniques will then be used to collect detailed information about the fabricated structures.
The researcher will apply AI and machine-learning algorithms to this experimental data to identify patterns linked to manufacturing defects.
Later stages will test these models in realistic fabrication scenarios to determine whether they can predict defects and help improve manufacturing processes.
Academic Requirements
Applicants need at least a UK 2:1 honours degree or an equivalent international qualification.
Relevant academic backgrounds include:
- Electronic engineering
- Physics
- Materials science
- Computer science
- Closely related disciplines
Funding Rules for Pakistani Students
Pakistani students can apply as international candidates. However, applicants should carefully check the funding conditions.
Southampton states that UK and EU students receive tuition fee coverage together with a tax-free living stipend.
International students may need additional faculty funding to cover the difference between domestic and international tuition fees.
Pakistani applicants should therefore confirm the complete funding package before accepting an offer.
Documents Required for Application
Applicants should prepare their academic and supporting documents before starting the application. Southampton lists documents including a CV, research proposal, two academic references, degree certificates and academic transcripts.
Candidates may also need to provide proof of English-language proficiency depending on their academic background.
How to Apply
Applicants must submit their application through the University of Southampton’s postgraduate research admissions system.
Candidates should select the research route within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and apply for the relevant PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Applicants should also identify the project and supervisor when completing the application.
The deadline to apply for the Deep Learning Modelling of Nano Defects in Chip Fabrication PhD is June 1, 2027.
