The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has clarified that the recent 7.05% increase in water and sewerage tariffs is an annual adjustment linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for FY 2025-26.
According to KWSC, the average monthly bill for domestic and commercial consumers stood at around Rs. 900 in FY 2025-26. Following the adjustment, it has increased to approximately Rs. 1,000 per month in FY 2026-27, translating into an additional cost of about Rs. 100 per month for the average consumer.
KWSC Chief Commercial Officer Haris Sarfraz said the tariff revision has been implemented under the relevant provisions of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation Act.
The revised rates will apply to around 1.289 million domestic and commercial consumers in Karachi, along with approximately 8,000 bulk and industrial consumers.
For bulk and industrial consumers billed on a volumetric basis, the tariff has increased from 0.526 paisa per gallon to 0.563 paisa per gallon in line with the 7.05% CPI-based adjustment.
Sarfraz said KWSC is facing rising operational costs, including higher expenses for electricity, fuel, repair and maintenance, and the rehabilitation of aging infrastructure.
He explained that the tariff adjustment is aimed at helping the corporation recover operational costs, strengthen its financial position, and ensure the long-term sustainability of its services.
According to the official, the additional revenue generated through the revised tariffs will be used to rehabilitate water transmission and distribution networks, repair and maintain critical facilities, upgrade the sewerage system, and improve overall service delivery.
Sarfraz further clarified that the revision is not aimed solely at increasing revenue. He said improving KWSC’s financial sustainability will allow the corporation to continue investing in infrastructure and provide more reliable, efficient, and sustainable water and sewerage services to Karachi residents.
