Punjab to Install 12,000 Cameras Under Rs. 5 Billion Safe Jail Project
Punjab has launched a Rs. 5 billion Safe Jail project to upgrade security at prisons across the province with artificial intelligence, modern surveillance and advanced security equipment. The project will initially cover 10 central jails, District Jail Lahore and 10 command and control centers.
Authorities will install more than 12,000 surveillance cameras under the project. The system will also include 615 panic buttons, 1,525 public address systems, 369 body cameras, 615 walkie talkie systems and 41 X-ray body scanners.
The government will add 82 under vehicle surveillance systems and 787 facial recognition access devices. The project also includes 133 software systems and 51 video conferencing systems. Officials reviewed the progress during a meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi.
They said the project team had procured and inspected 80% of the required equipment. The new cameras will provide facial and vehicle recognition, night vision and anti shake capabilities. Artificial intelligence will support security monitoring.
The system will monitor prison staff, prisoners and visitors. It will also cover entry and exit points, offices, barracks, security walls, jammer areas, kitchens, hospitals and libraries. Authorities will receive automatic alerts when the system detects violations of prison regulations.
Qazi ordered officials to speed up the work and monitor progress daily. Central Jail Lahore and its command and control center will become operational this month. The government expects to complete the province wide project by March 2027.
The project will also establish control rooms at prisons, regional deputy inspector general offices, the Inspector General of Prisons office and the Home Department. NRTC will implement the project, while the Punjab Safe Cities Authority will provide consultancy. The contract also includes five years of operations and maintenance after completion.
