JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman took a swipe at Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in the National Assembly on Wednesday, saying defence agreements were being negotiated in Iran while Pakistan’s defence minister was at home.
“Khawaja Asif sahib is also present here. A defence agreement is being made in Iran, and the defence minister is sitting here,” Fazlur Rehman said, before turning Asif’s own famous line against him: “Koi sharam hoti hai, koi haya hoti hai” (Have some shame, have some decency).
The remark drew laughter in the House, and a video of the exchange shared by JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza has since gone viral on social media.
Remark Linked to Tehran Talks
Fazlur Rehman’s comment referred to the high-level talks held in Tehran on Monday, where Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior Iranian officials.
The three envoys represented the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, the military alliance signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye in August.
It was the first meeting between representatives of the pact and Iranian leaders, and focused on regional security and preventing a fresh military escalation.
Khawaja Asif said a day later that Pakistan would defend Saudi Arabia with full force under the pact.
Asif’s Own Words Come Back to Haunt Him
“Koi sharam hoti hai, koi haya hoti hai” is one of the most quoted lines in Pakistani politics. Khawaja Asif famously used it in the National Assembly years ago to criticise PTI lawmakers, and it has since become a popular meme.
Social media users were quick to point out that this may be the first time the line has been used against Asif himself, with him sitting in the House.
During the same speech, Fazlur Rehman also called on the government and opposition to sit together and draw up a new Charter of Democracy.
