Roti and Naan Get More Expensive in Lahore
Roti prices have reached Rs. 20 and naan prices Rs. 35 in Lahore following the suspension of subsidized flour supplies, with tandoor owners warning that prices could rise further.
The United Naan Roti Association has refused to comply with government-fixed prices, citing higher flour and fuel costs that have made it difficult for businesses to operate at the prescribed rates.
Association President Aftab Aslam Gul said the Food Department previously supplied subsidized flour to tandoor owners, allowing them to sell roti at government-notified prices.
He said a 10-kilogram bag of flour previously cost Rs. 1,100, while a 15-kilogram bag now costs Rs. 2,350. He added that rising liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices had further increased operating expenses.
Gul urged the government to ensure the supply of flour and gas at affordable rates to help stabilize roti and naan prices. The suspension of subsidized flour supplies and rising fuel costs have raised concerns about further increases in the prices of these staple foods.
