“Has 4G Passed Away?” Lawmakers Question Pakistan’s 5G Rollout
Pakistan’s lawmakers have criticized poor internet speeds across the country, questioning the rollout of 5G services while existing connectivity problems remain unresolved.
Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology Sabeen Ghoury told the National Assembly that 5G services had been launched in 24 cities, with expansion planned after the network becomes stable in those locations.
Lawmakers Question Internet Service Quality
Presiding Officer Abdul Qadir Patel and other lawmakers complained about slow internet services, with some alleging that connectivity had deteriorated since the incumbent government came to power.
Patel questioned the introduction of 5G while existing services remained unreliable, asking, “Has 4G passed away that 5G has been introduced?”
During the proceedings, Ghoury was unable to explain the meaning of 5G when questioned, prompting Aseefa Bhutto Zardari to offer to explain the technology to her. Aseefa also raised concerns about internet connectivity in different parts of the country, particularly Nawabshah, where she said neither 4G nor 5G services were working.
Government Cites Network Stability and Security
Ghoury said the government planned to extend 5G services to more cities once the network became stable in the initial locations. She added that security challenges, including unrest and terrorism in certain areas, had also affected 3G and 2G services.
Lawmakers continued to call for faster internet speeds and more reliable connectivity, stressing its importance for businesses and other sectors that depend on digital services.
