Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarships in Canada

University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada is preparing to open applications for its Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Electrical and Computer Engineering for September 2027 admission.

The research-based program offers access to scholarships, research assistantships, and teaching opportunities.

According to UBC’s published funding statistics, students included in its funded cohort received a median annual funding amount of CAD 32,575 during their first two years of study.

However, the university does not guarantee this amount to every admitted student, as financial support depends on available awards, assistantships, and individual supervisors.

Both Canadian and international applicants, including Pakistani students, can apply for the program. Applications will open on October 15, 2026, with a closing date of January 15, 2027.

Scholarship Benefits

The University of British Columbia provides financial support opportunities through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, university scholarships, and external awards.

According to the university’s published funding statistics for September 2023 to August 2024, funded students included in its study received a median annual amount of CAD 32,575 before tuition and fees.

The same data shows a median net funding amount of CAD 22,970 after deducting tuition and student fees. These figures describe funding received by a group of 75 supported students during their first two years of study and do not represent a guaranteed scholarship for all applicants.

Students can receive research assistantships from faculty supervisors who have funding available for graduate research projects. Individual supervisors decide whether to offer these positions, allowing selected students to gain research experience while receiving financial support.

Tuition Fees and Additional Financial Assistance

UBC charges tuition fees for its Electrical and Computer Engineering MASc program. The university’s published annual tuition rates are approximately CAD 10,081.65 for international students and CAD 5,738.52 for domestic students.

Eligible international students can receive an International Tuition Award worth up to CAD 3,200 per year. The university automatically considers qualifying full-time students enrolled in eligible research-based graduate programs for this award.

UBC also lists additional student fees of approximately CAD 1,203.20 annually. Students should consider these charges alongside accommodation, food, transportation, and other living expenses in Vancouver.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

UBC also considers applicants with suitable academic backgrounds in engineering physics, physics, computer science, and other fields with substantial overlap in electrical or computer engineering.

The university generally requires a minimum academic average in the B+ range, equivalent to approximately 76% under its grading system. However, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering prefers candidates with first-class academic records and demonstrated research aptitude.

Pakistani applicants must meet UBC’s country-specific master’s admission requirements. The university recognises eligible four-year engineering degrees and other qualifying academic credentials with first-class or first-division standing.

Applicants should demonstrate research interests that align with the department’s available specialisations. UBC encourages candidates to identify potential faculty supervisors and explain their research goals in their applications.

English Language Requirements

International applicants who do not qualify for an English-language exemption must demonstrate their proficiency through an accepted examination.

For the Electrical and Computer Engineering MASc program, UBC lists an IELTS Academic overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each component.

For TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 21, 2026, the university requires an overall score of 100 under the previous 120-point system. Applicants must achieve at least 22 in Reading and Listening and 21 in Writing and Speaking.

For TOEFL iBT examinations taken on or after January 21, 2026, UBC applies the revised six-point scoring system. Candidates must achieve an overall score of 5.0, with the department’s specified minimum component scores.

Required Documents

Candidates must prepare their academic documents and supporting information before completing the graduate admission application.

UBC requires academic transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions and three references. Applicants must provide their referees’ details through the online admissions system so the university can collect recommendation letters.

Candidates should also prepare information about their academic interests and proposed research areas. The department asks applicants to identify faculty members whose research aligns with their interests.

Applicants must submit English-language proficiency results where required. They should also review the department’s application instructions for any additional statements, research information, or supporting documents.

How to Apply for the Master of Applied Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarship

Interested candidates must apply through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admissions portal.

Applicants should first visit the UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering MASc program page to review the admission requirements, research areas, and funding opportunities.

Candidates must create or use a UBC Campus-Wide Login account and select the Master of Applied Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering program for the September 2027 intake.

Applicants should complete the online application with their educational information, research interests, and details of three referees. They must also identify faculty members whose work matches their intended area of research.

UBC charges an application fee of CAD 168.25 for international applicants under its published fee schedule. Candidates must pay the applicable fee unless they qualify for an exemption.

After submitting the application, candidates must upload the required transcripts and arrange for their referees to submit recommendation letters within the prescribed deadlines.

Applicants seeking financial support should explore available departmental awards and assistantships and contact relevant faculty members regarding potential research funding.

The university does not advertise a separate scholarship application that automatically awards CAD 32,575 to every admitted MASc student.
