WhatsApp to Block Logins on Phones Running Older Android or iOS Versions

WhatsApp is rolling out a new server-side feature that can prevent users from logging in if their phone is running an outdated version of Android or iOS.

Because the change is being enabled from WhatsApp’s servers, users do not need a specific version of the app to receive it. The feature is reportedly rolling out on both Android and iOS.

Users May Be Asked to Update Their Phone First

If WhatsApp detects that a device is running an older operating system, it may show a warning screen and block access to the account.

The message tells users to open their phone’s Settings and install the latest available system update before trying to log in again.

WhatsApp also explains how users can check which version of Android or iOS their phone is currently running. There is no option to skip the requirement.

Security Appears to Be the Reason

The feature appears to be aimed at improving security by stopping devices with older software and known vulnerabilities from accessing WhatsApp.

Attackers often target flaws in outdated operating systems because they can make it easier to install malware.

Even though WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, malware already installed on a phone could still create risks, including sending malicious links to trusted contacts.

Which Android and iOS Versions Are Affected?

WhatsApp has not yet announced exactly which versions of Android and iOS will trigger the new login restriction.

For now, the company appears to be rolling out the feature gradually through a server-side update.
