The US State Department has urged travelers to reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia, upgrading the country to a Level 3 advisory on September 16, 2026, due to security risks, regional conflict, and terrorism concerns.
The advisory cites threats from Iranian drones and missiles, armed conflict, terrorism and exit bans. It comes amid heightened tensions following hostilities between the United States and Iran that began in late February 2026.
A Level 4 “do not travel” warning remains in place for areas within 20 miles of the Yemen border because of terrorism and cross-border attacks. The State Department also said US government employees need special authorization to travel to several provinces, including Jizan, Asir, Najran and Qatif.
Despite the alert, Umrah and Hajj travel remains active, and Saudi airspace is still open. Saudi authorities have not suspended pilgrimage travel, and national carriers continue operating domestic and international flights.
The warning follows a Houthi drone interception south of Mecca on September 15, when Saudi air defenses stopped the drone before it entered restricted airspace. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki called the security of Islam’s holiest sites a “red line.”
Travelers in major cities such as Riyadh, Jeddah and Mecca have been advised to stay alert, monitor local updates and avoid activity that could trigger legal trouble, including social media posts critical of the Saudi government.
