London Mayor Sadiq Khan has formally joined the House of Lords after being granted the title of Lord Khan of Tooting.
Khan took the oath in the upper chamber of the British Parliament as a Labour life peer, marking another major milestone in his political career. Official parliamentary records show that he was created Baron Khan of Tooting for life through Letters Patent dated August 20.
The peerage takes its name from Tooting, the London area where Khan was born and which he represented in Parliament for 11 years before becoming mayor. Members of his family attended the ceremony along with about a dozen Labour MPs from London, including Dawn Butler, Tulip Siddiq, and Rupa Huq.
Khan was introduced to the House of Lords by former Labour leader Lord Kinnock and human rights lawyer Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws. He took the traditional oath, signed the official roll and an undertaking to follow the House of Lords Code of Conduct.
He was sworn in alongside another new Labour peer, Lord Roberto Neri, director of UK Music. Neri was accompanied by Lord Kennedy of Southwark and Baroness Kennedy of Cradley Heath.
After taking their oaths, the two new peers were welcomed in the chamber before shaking hands with Lord Speaker Lord Forsyth of Drumlean. Khan later met Leader of the House of Lords Baroness Smith of Basildon, her deputy Lord Collins of Highbury, and former EastEnders actor Lord Cashman as he left the chamber.
The peerages of Khan and Neri were announced during the final week of Sir Keir Starmer’s time in Downing Street.
Before entering Parliament, Khan worked as a solicitor specializing in human rights law. He was elected as MP for Tooting in 2005 and represented the constituency until 2016. During Gordon Brown’s government, he held several positions and eventually served as Minister of State for Transport.
Khan was first elected Mayor of London in 2016 and went on to win three consecutive terms, becoming the first person to achieve the feat. His time in office has also made him the longest-serving Mayor of London since the position was created in 2000.
As mayor, Khan has led London through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, terrorist attacks, and environmental issues. He is London’s first Muslim mayor.
Khan was also awarded a knighthood for political and public service. King Charles formally knighted him during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in June 2025.
