Xiaomi 18 Pro series will retain the secondary rear screen that debuted with the Xiaomi 17 series last year, but now the screen will be able to do more.
The ongoing teaser campaign has confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro phones will be able to generate mini apps through the second screen.
The rear screen on the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will run AI-generated apps that users can create and use directly from the back of the phone.
Xiaomi’s official teaser video shows several examples of how the new system works. These include an egg-cooking timer, water-drinking reminder, Pomodoro focus timer, English vocabulary tool, and recipe recommendation card.
Instead of choosing only from a fixed collection of widgets, users can create small apps for specific tasks when they need them.
They can also pin frequently used apps to the rear display for easier access.
Builds on Xiaomi 17 Pro Rear Screen
The feature builds on Xiaomi’s MiShare back screen, which debuted on the Xiaomi 17 Pro last year.
According to Xiaomi, users interacted with app cards on the previous system more than 4 million times per day and added more than 3.5 million wallpapers daily.
Those numbers appear to have encouraged Xiaomi to expand the rear screen’s capabilities rather than make only minor changes to the existing system.
Lu Weibing, Partner and President of Xiaomi Group, President of the Mobile Phone Division and General Manager of the Xiaomi brand, said different users have different needs for a rear display.
He said Xiaomi is using more advanced solutions this year to expand what users can do with the screen instead of treating it only as an additional display.
Xiaomi 18 Pro Launching This Month
The Xiaomi 18 Pro series is confirmed to launch this month.
Xiaomi has described it as the biggest upgrade in the history of its digital series.
Along with the new rear-screen features, the upcoming phones are expected to bring upgrades to performance, cameras, battery life, and AI capabilities.
