Pakistan’s new auto policy is in its final stages and is expected to be launched soon, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan said.
Speaking on the private news channel program, Akhtar said the new policy would also remove additional customs duties and regulatory duties. The policy is now “almost complete” and will be formally announced soon.
He said the policy had taken time to finalize because of major changes in the automotive sector, including increased competition, the growth of electric vehicles and the introduction of a national tariff policy.
He said the number of car manufacturers in Pakistan had increased from three to 13 under the previous two auto policies, making competition an important consideration in developing the new framework.
“The biggest change has been the arrival of electric vehicles,” Akhtar said, adding that the new policy would include measures to facilitate EVs.
He said extensive discussions had been held on the policy and that work was now focused on its legal aspects. The government has also taken additional time to formulate the framework to avoid repeating mistakes made under previous policies.
According to Akhtar, a key objective of the new policy is to make vehicles more affordable for consumers while maintaining a balance that allows locally produced vehicles to compete with vehicles in international markets.
